M5 Front Bumper Installation--Step 1

Putting Together the M5 Front Bumper

M5 Front Bumper Parts (START)

Removing Stock Bumper Parts in Engine Compartment (STEP 2)

1. Installing the M5 Fog Lamps

Remove the original fog lamps from your car. Click the appropriate option to show you how (broadband or modem).

Save one Body Nut and Hex Head Screw from the original fog lamp attachment assembly for each of the M5 Fog Lamps.
Attach the Body Nut (clip) to the M5 Fog Lamp itself.

Place the appropriate M5 Fog Lamp into its appropriate side. Click here for the parts detail.

You will need to slide the M5's Fog Lamp tabs into the bumper's tab receiving area. The tab receiving area of the front bumper is located at the periphery of each side. It is a tight fit.

You will know you are seated fully when the Body Nut is lined up with the front bumper's screw hole.
Screw the Hex Screw Head (7mm diameter socket bit) from BEHIND the fog lamp and bumper. The head of the screw will be on the same side of the M5 Fog Lamp where the fog lamp's plug housing is located.

Snap into place the appropriate Fog Lamp Frame from the front of the bumper. Confirm that the tabs are fully seated.

The Fog Lamp Frame does not provide access to service a burnt out fog lamp bulb once it is in place. That is why the Hex Head Screw, that secures the fog lamp to the bumper, must be screwed into its hole from BEHIND the bumper. Access is achieved by removing the fender liner. top

2 Installation of the Grid

The next step is to secure the Grid.

Behind the large opening, that distinguishes the M5 front bumper from all the rest, are several thin rods. They appear to be excess plastic. DO NOT cut these off!!! They are used to secure the Grid.

Align the Grid so that these thin rods go through the appropriate holes of the Grid.
Use the Axial Clips (10) to secure the Grid into place.
Simply slide the Axial Clips over the thin rods and tighten with finger pressure. Top

3. Transferring the Metal Front Bumper Core

Jack up the car high enough so that Jack stands can be used to hold the car up. BE CAREFUL!!! MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS SECURE AND STABLE. PLACE STOPPING BLOCKS BEHIND THE REAR WHEELS TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL ROLL BACK!!!!

After you have removed the original fog lamps, two hex head screws (7mm socket bit) will be visible arranged in a vertical alignment. Unscrew those two screws. This will separate the original front bumper from the brake air ducts.

Go to each front wheel well and unscrew another hex head screw (8mm diameter socket bit) to remove the front fender liner. Remove all 3 screws from each side and SAVE!!! You will need these hex head screws to attach the M5 Front Fender Liners.

Nearby the screws that held onto the brake air ducts, is the major screw that holds the front bumper on. It is located on the same surface as the expanding rivots you had to remove to get to the fog lamp attachment assembly. This large bolt requires a Torx-50 (T-50) type of bit. Go to Sears and pick up one. Remove completely.
Simply pull on the front bumper. It should come off easily. Place the stock front bumper on some huge towels or a large rug so that the surface paint doesn't get scratched.
The reason why it is so heavy is that there is a large metal piece in the middle of the stock bumper. We need to retrieve this. It is held on by Expanding Rivots that have no heads. You need to punch the center piece through. There are several under the trim too (the black or painted body moldings strips). You will need to take off the trim to access those expanding rivots without heads. If you break them, it doesn't matter because we are going to exchange them for the Expanding Rivots with Heads, so that if servicing is necessary, they are easier to remove. The Metal Bumper Core is free to be removed and placed into the M5 Front Bumper. You may want to clean it first.
Once placed into the M5 Front Bumper, secure it with the Expanding Rivots with Heads. There are 8 total. Top

4 Installation of the Molding

Take the Molding Trim whether it is stock black or painted. Mine is black because my car is a year 2000. Painted side moldings were done in the year 2001. Snap them into place.

5 Installation of the Rubber Gaskets

From the stock bumper, retrieve the upper rubber gaskets unless you ordered new ones. Simply take a screw driver and pry a corner off to get you started. Wash thoroughly. NOTE which one belongs on which side.

Place the rubber gasket on the M5 Front Bumper onto its appropriate side. Top
The M5 Bumper is now Fully Assembled!!! Place aside where it can't be damaged.
